Department Of History

One of the important objectives behind of establishing Shri Shivaji Mahavidyalaya, Barshi is to promote the studies in history, society and culture of Maharashtra. Eminent social reformer Dr. Mamasaheb Jagdale, who had initially Conceive the idea of a Senior College in Barshi and established Shri Shivaji Mahavidyalaya in Barshi. The Department of History which was introduced from June, 1964 is one of the pioneering departments of Shri Shivaji Mahavidyalaya, which undertook teaching, research and extension activities focusing on Indian History with emphasis on the history of the Marathas. There was a Post Graduate section attached to this department from June, 1982 and Research Centre from June 2015. During more than last five decades the department has emerged as a vibrant Department not only in the University but also in the whole Maharashtra State. Prof Harichandra Kamte and Mrs, Mathura Pawar were former Heads of the Department. The Department has to its credit several valuable research publications in History and many research projects funded by national agencies like UGC, New Delhi. Ours is the only department in PAH Solapur University’s affiliated colleges where PhD’s Research in history is in introduced.
